Pasquale Butera - Owner & Vigneron
Pasquale has always entertained the desire to follow a lifelong ambition to plant a vineyard and produce quality wine. Grape growing and wine making was a major part of family life in Southern Italy. Most of the viticulture principles employed at Bass River have been developed by Pasquale’s knowledge of the vine, earth and water.
In Pasquale’s evolving and expanding professional career, Pasquale developed a successfully building practise, concentrating on the construction of bespoke homes throughout Melbourne and the regions. However, since the purchase of Bass River in 1983 after returning from a family holiday to Italy, there was desire to spend more time in vineyards once again.
Despite some suggestion that the region was not suited to grow grapes, Pasquale engaged a professional team of advisors to assist in developing the vineyard. In 1998, the first planting was completed, this quickly followed by much larger planting in 1999, 2006 and 2012.
Pasquale’s passion is to support the vines, grow grapes and nurture the land knowing fully well that wine is made in the vineyard. Pasquale’s persistence with the land, the region and the vine has resulted in the ongoing success of Bass River.
Frank Butera - Wine maker
Initially, it was Frank’s inheritance, the rich history of food, culture and wine that lead him to pursue an interest in wine making. Frank completed studies in physics in 1996 and soon afterwards commenced the Wine Science Degree at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. The combination of both studies gives Frank a thorough understanding of the mechanisms involved with grapes and wine. Frank is a science and engineering professional whose keen and questioning intellect continues to find fresh challenges in wine making, notwithstanding a strong philosophy and culture of non-interventionist wine making principles.
